Overview Recent increasing occurrence of disasters worldwide have happened at a large human cost and brought along severe socio-economic consequences for affected populations. From the original focus on natural hazards, the disaster theories have now expanded to include a broad range of human-induced disasters, like complex emergencies and crises, thus fitting the disaster and crisis management as an integral part of the humanitarian response. Conducting accurate, effective and timely needs assessments is crucial in preparation and planning of humanitarian programmes and projects as they often form a solid basis for a coherent monitoring process.
