Monitoring and Evaluation

Overview

Monitoring and evaluation are essential activities ensuring project’s success, including in a development or humanitarian response setting, where there exists continuous need for feeding the results back to stakeholders and beneficiaries. The course will emphasize practical application of basic and essential principles of program monitoring and evaluation. Participants will be introduced to the key methods and tools used in monitoring and evaluation of interventions in humanitarian and development contexts.

 

Training methodology

The course will combine theoretical and practical approaches to learning. The participants will be introduced to the M&E concept in humanitarian setting through presentations, case studies and interactive learning. The course has a strong practical component, where participants will learn, on real-life examples how to apply knowledge to practice in their respective fields. This will be achieved through combination of individual and group work, followed by presentation of their course work.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the stages in an M&E system
  • Know how to develop a framework that links project activities to outcomes and impacts (goals)
  • Understand how to apply general monitoring and evaluation concepts and methods to specific technical areas and overall programme management
  • Know how to develop indicators that effectively identify progress toward project outcomes
  • Develop a system to collect and compile data
  • Determine an appropriate method of analyzing, presenting and disseminating information
  • Use information to identify problems and recommend solutions
  • Distinguish between process-, outcome-, and impact-level evaluations
  • Identify methods for overcoming barriers to effective monitoring and evaluation
  • Understand design components of a monitoring flow process
  • Understand how to design and implement a monitoring and evaluation work plan for a programme
